Girls on the Run New Site Application Process

Thank you for your interest in Girls on the Run. Our mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We provide a 12-week after-school character development program that builds on the power of running for girls in grades 3 – 8. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County operates sites throughout the county. We are in a period of growth, adding several new sites each season (spring and fall). We encourage you to review our application process and form, bring together the community volunteers and resources needed to launch a site, and work with us to provide the high-quality, life-changing Girls on the Run program.

What we’ve learned:

Our council has been providing Girls on the Run since 2005, and we have been expanding each year. Along the way, we have learned some key lessons about what it takes to launch a successful new site:

Schools are a great place for the program because of the easy transition for parents, use of facilities, and connectedness of school communities; however, other locations such as parks, community centers, and after school programs can also work well.

Success in a new site depends on having a core group of at least two – three adults who are really excited and committed to making the program a success — they can be parents, teachers, administrators, community members, other volunteers.

At some sites, families are able to pay most of the fees themselves, and may be more available to lend a hand with GOTR activities including supplying snacks; at other sites, families are really stretched for time and financial resources, so we commit to bring in other community support and resources to make those sites equally successful.

The first time offering the program is a big learning experience — there will be bumps, but all the sites say they’ll be back in the spring and that it’s ALL worth it!
